Asia Calling: Can Euro-Vision survive the Asia-Pacific?

As Euro-Vision expands into Asia-Pacific, the contest faces the harder test: building regional unity in a landscape shaped by rivalry and unequal influence.

For nearly seventy years, Eurovision has shown that a continent can put aside its differences for one night of music. The move into Asia-Pacific follows the same idea, but the region is far more diverse in culture, language, and politics. The earlier belief that a spin-off just needs a bigger stage and a new flag has now become a tougher question: what does a shared contest mean when the participants have so little in common?

On 14 November 2026, that question gets its first live answer. The inaugural Eurovision Song Contest Asia takes place in Bangkok, and viewers anywhere can stream it on the official Eurovision YouTube channel. The venue is One Bangkok Forum, and Thailand’s Channel 3 hosts the show.

The scale is notable, but the timing is too. Thailand hosts a contest for a region whose most powerful music markets are largely absent. The missing giants—Australia, China, India, and Japan—represent over 70 percent of recorded music revenue and a vast share of the regional television audience. For industry analysts, this absence highlights the uphill task of creating a truly pan-Asian event from the start.

The road to this point was long. The European Broadcasting Union (EBU) first announced plans for an Asia-Pacific version in 2008. Australia’s Special Broadcasting Service (SBS) began developing it around 2016–2017 but shelved the project in 2021. Voxovation, a company established to adapt the format for new regions under an EBU license, took over in 2025. Eighteen years of false starts mean this edition bears the weight of a repeatedly delayed début.
